OSHA Compliance and Special Inspection Services

FEI’s professional Construction Inspection Services (CIS) focuses on serving as an advocate to affirm and document for our clients that their projects are constructed in accordance with all contract documents and meet or exceed American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) construction standards. FEI has extensive experience with all aspects of construction. FEI meets our clients’ needs by providing experienced, highly-qualified project staff.

FEI executes inspections with efficiency and accuracy utilizing the latest in handheld field technology. Since 2002, when FEI first opened its doors, we pride ourselves not only in providing high quality service and productivity, but also with honesty and integrity in all that we do. FEI is extremely committed to our customers and accept nothing less than delivering excellence in construction inspection services.

FEI’s Special Inspector Services may have to perform:

  • Foundation observations
  • Concrete placement testing /observations
  • Observations of steel connections in concrete (including anchor system wall connections)
  • Concrete block masonry inspections (including Masonry Prism Strength Testing according to ASTM C1314-10)
  • Structural steel observations (including inspections of installation of high-strength bolts, welding, steel framing and connections, structural steel, and cold- formed framing connections)
  • Spray-on fireproofing for typical construction projects

Special Inspection Construction Services, may include the following during construction:

Site Preparation and Grading (Earthwork):

  • Observe proof rolling operations and make recommendations for undercutting and/or stabilization, if required by an Engineer from our Office.
  • Provide qualified personnel for performing field density and moisture content tests on an “on-call basis”. Perform compaction tests on backfill in utility trenches.
  • Perform laboratory testing of proposed fill soils to check their suitability, and moisture content versus dry density relationship.
  • Verification of compaction on structural fill materials such as aggregate base course, crushed rock, pea gravel and/or sand.

 Foundation Bearing Surface Testing:

  • Provide qualified personnel to perform hand auger borings and dynamic cone penetrometer testing in general accordance with ASTM STP-399 at select locations within the footing excavations to verify that the design allowable pressure is available.
  • If required, recommendations for remedial work will be rendered by an engineer from our office.
  • Evaluate the slab sub-grade prior to concrete placement.

Structural Concrete Inspection, Sampling and Testing:

  • Review concrete mix designs for compliance with project specifications.
  • Sample and test plastic concrete and mold compressive strength test cylinders for structural concrete on a “part-time basis”. Testing of the plastic concrete will include measurement of its slump, air content, and temperature.
  • Observe the installation of reinforcing steel and anchor bolts prior to the placement of concrete. Perform laboratory compressive strength tests on cured concrete cylinders.
  • Report the results of our field and laboratory tests to other members of the construction team, as you request.

 Masonry Inspection, Sampling and Testing:

  • Review mortar and grout mix designs for compliance with project specifications.
  • Observe the installation of reinforcing steel for masonry foundation wall, masonry unit cell cleanliness, observe mortar and expansion joints, and sample the placement of grout and mortar.
  • Perform laboratory compressive strength tests on cured mortar and grout samples.
  • Report the results of our field and laboratory tests to other members of the construction team, as you request.

 Fireproofing:

  • FEI performs a sequence of steel member surface inspections before fireproofing is applied, followed by application observations, thickness and bond testing and obtain samples for density testing in our laboratory.
